Mitt Romney, a Republican senator from Utah, used to be one of the most popular Republicans in the country. In 2012, he ran against Barack Obama, who had been president before. Later, he ran for a seat in the Senate and won. In the last few years, he has stayed popular in his state, but people who support former President Donald Trump hate him very much. He recently spoke out against President Joe Biden and for the beliefs of his party.

On March 27, Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) said he was introducing the Congressional Review Act with Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and 35 other Republicans (CRA). The goal of the resolution is to stop Biden’s plan to get rid of millions of Americans’ student loan debt. The senator said that the policy doesn’t really get rid of anything. Instead, it puts the person who borrowed the money on the hook for the debt.

Biden announced the plan to cancel either $10,000 or $20,000 in student debt for people who met certain financial qualifications. Romney said the plan “makes no sense.” He claimed it’s “unfair to those who already repaid their loans” or who chose paths that didn’t include taking on debt. Further, the former presidential nominee said the debt cancellation policy is “wildly inflationary at a time of already historic inflation.”

Cassidy has also said that Biden didn’t really get rid of the debt. He said that those who didn’t take out loans would have to carry the weight. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) said that the president’s policy was “unfair” to Americans who worked hard to pay off their debt, sometimes by working more than one job at once.

The Supreme Court is now looking at Biden’s plan to get rid of loan debt. The Supreme Court recently heard a case against it, and they will decide in the spring whether or not to let it stand. People in the U.S. who wanted the cancellation to happen are waiting to find out what to do next.
