Republicans’ request for Hunter Biden’s records was denied by the US Treasury.
Even though Hunter Biden hasn’t exactly been the target of Republican criticism, the department went so far as to ask for further details about the grounds behind the Republicans’ request.
On Wednesday, the US Treasury Department rejected a request from House Republicans for reports of suspicious activity involving the international banking and business dealings of President Joe Biden’s family, including Hunter Biden.
The President’s son, Hunter Biden, has openly battled drug addiction. Many Republicans think he was involved in and maybe benefited from his business transactions in China and the Ukraine.
Comer and other Republicans have previously claimed that they have proof that Hunter and Joe Biden exchanged finances, credit cards, and bank accounts. Republicans implied that the Treasury Department has at least 150 SARs pertaining to financial transactions involving Biden family members in an interim report published in November.
Treasury’s legislative affairs director Jonathan Davidson wrote House Oversight and Accountability Chairman James Comer that the panel’s justifications for requesting such highly sensitive material required further explanation.
In a letter dated January 11 and sent to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, Comer asked for any allegations of suspicious conduct pertaining to the international transactions and other activities of President Biden’s son.
In a letter on Wednesday, Davidson warned that inappropriate publication of such material might jeopardize the executive branch’s capacity to carry out law enforcement, intelligence, and national security duties. Davidson did not confirm or deny the existence of such reports on the Biden family.
Comer responded by stating that it is troubling and raises many issues that the Biden Administration is trying to keep information regarding the President and his family’s business dealings a secret. According to Comer, “this coordinated effort by the Biden Administration to hide information about President Biden and his family’s shady business schemes is alarming and raises many questions. The Committee is investigating President Biden’s knowledge of and role in these schemes to assess whether he has compromised our national security at the expense of the American people.”
Davidson, the Treasury’s affairs chief, responded, “make determinations concerning how to accommodate legitimate legislative needs while also protecting Executive Branch interests, including law enforcement needs.”
Comer responded to Davidson’s letter from the Treasury after receiving it, saying he would keep asking to see the reports and would use “the power of the gavel to get them if needed.”
