Marvel Studios has terminated its agreement with Jonathan Majors, the actor known for his role as “Kang the Conqueror.” In March, the 34-year-old artist was apprehended and accused of both harassing and assaulting his former girlfriend.
Following a jury’s conviction on both charges, Majors has faced repercussions, losing affiliations with various enterprises. Marvel, aiming to safeguard its image, has decided to sever ties with him in light of his confirmed guilt.
Born on September 7, 1989, in Lompoc, California, Jonathan Michael Majors hails from a background where his father served as a military chaplain. His early years were spent at Vandenburg Air Force Base until his father’s departure, after which he relocated with his family to Texas.
Acknowledging past challenges, Jonathan Majors openly confesses to a teenage incident involving shoplifting and facing difficulties at school due to involvement in fights. However, a transformative moment occurred when he discovered theater, leading him to make a positive change in his life. His commitment to the craft eventually led him to earn an MFA degree from the Yale School of Drama.
Making his debut as Ken Jones in the ABC Miniseries “When We Rise” while still at Yale, Jonathan Majors embarked on his acting journey. His initial foray into film was marked by the western “Hostiles,” serving as his first movie role. Subsequently, he garnered recognition through various film and television projects, with a significant breakthrough in 2019 with his role in “The Last Black Man in San Francisco.”
Within two years, Jonathan Majors ascended to leading roles, catching the attention of Marvel, which cast him in diverse variants of Kang the Conqueror across multiple shows. His involvement extends to being cast as Kang in two forthcoming Avengers movies, namely “The Kang Dynasty” and “Secret Wars.” Additionally, Majors filmed recruitment videos for the US Army, showcasing his versatility and expanding his professional portfolio.
In 2021, Jonathan Majors featured in Marvel’s “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania,” which unfortunately experienced underwhelming box office performance. During the filming in England, he crossed paths with British dancer Grace Jabbari, sparking a romantic relationship. However, on March 25, 2023, the New York Police Department arrested Majors, leveling charges of harassment, assault, and strangulation against him.
Following the incident, Grace Jabbari, who sustained injuries to her head and neck, received brief hospitalization. Despite Jonathan Majors denying any wrongdoing, his attorneys presented text messages, purportedly from Jabbari, asserting his innocence. Nevertheless, Jabbari sought a protection order against Majors. Concurrently, the U.S. Army opted to cancel the release of videos featuring him, and his PR firm took the step of closing his account.
On December 18, a New York jury acquitted Jonathan Majors of intentional assault and aggravated harassment but found him guilty of harassment and reckless assault. Scheduled for sentencing on February 6, he potentially faces up to a year in prison. However, the impact on his career is already evident, as Marvel declared that Majors will not be part of its upcoming projects. Once a promising actor less than a year ago, Majors now confronts a setback that may have lasting repercussions on his once-thriving acting career.
